New Delhi, April 27 (IANS). Many changes take place in a woman’s body after delivery. The body becomes weak, hormones change and the immune system also becomes a little weak. In such a situation, mild fever can sometimes be normal, but it is not right to take every fever lightly. Therefore, it is very important to understand when fever is normal and when it can be a sign of a serious problem.
If a woman has a mild fever after delivery, such as less than 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and that too resolves within 1 to 2 days, it can often be a part of the body’s normal process. Many times the body is healing itself after delivery, during which you may feel mild heat or fatigue along with fever. But, if the fever continues to increase or persists for more than 3 days, it can be an alarm bell.
The most common cause of fever after delivery is urine infection (UTI). This may include burning sensation while urinating, frequent urination, and sometimes even pain or shivering. Another reason is genital infection, which can cause pain in the lower abdomen, smelly or abnormally colored discharge and a feeling of heaviness.
Many women also suffer from breast swelling or infection (mastitis), especially when the baby is not able to drink milk properly. In this the breast becomes red, hard and very painful and may also be accompanied by fever and body ache.
If the woman has delivered by operation (cesarean), then infection can also occur at the site of surgery. There may be redness, pain and swelling near the stitches. This condition can be serious and requires immediate treatment.
Additionally, sometimes fever along with swelling and pain in the legs can also be a sign of a blood clot, which is a very serious condition. Additionally, common viral or respiratory infections can also cause fever.
If the fever is mild, take rest, take light and liquid food, keep the body hydrated and take treatment as per the doctor’s advice. Some Ayurvedic remedies like lukewarm water, coriander decoction or consumption of Giloy can also help, but these should be taken only with the doctor’s advice.
