Islamabad, March 31 (IANS). The first case of MPOX has been reported in Karachi city of Pakistan in the year 2026. Local media gave this information on Tuesday quoting hospital sources.
The 31-year-old man, who returned from abroad, was identified with suspicious symptoms during screening at Karachi airport. He was immediately taken to Sindh Infectious Disease Hospital, where he was examined.
According to Pakistan’s leading newspaper ‘Express Tribune’, after examination in the hospital, the young man was confirmed to have mpox. Medical Superintendent Dr. Wahid Rajput said that after the patient’s condition improved, he was discharged from the hospital within two days.
Earlier on February 7, the second MPox-related death was recorded in Pakistan. The deceased 53-year-old man was also suffering from HIV and Hepatitis B and C. He died during treatment at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).
According to hospital and health officials, the patient had wounds on his body and genitals, Pakistan’s leading media outlet Geo News reported. He died during treatment on February 7, becoming the second MPox-related death in Pakistan so far.
According to officials, the patient had no history of recent travel abroad, indicating that MPox infection is spreading locally in Pakistan. The case raised concerns among public health experts that the virus was spreading in Pakistan, and there was clear evidence of community spread.
The first death from mpox in Pakistan was recorded in Islamabad in December 2023, making it clear that the disease can be more dangerous for people with weakened immune systems.
According to federal health ministry and National Institutes of Health officials, 53 confirmed cases of mpox were reported in Pakistan in 2025, most of which were detected during screening at airports and hospitals.
