New Delhi, October 31 (IANS). Gudmar, called Madhunashini or Gurmar in Ayurveda, is a bushy vine found in India, Africa and Australia. In Ayurveda, it is considered a medicine with bitter and pungent juice that calms Kapha and Vata dosha. Its leaves, roots and seeds are all used medicinally.
Gudmar is best known for controlling diabetes. Jaggery lowers blood sugar, increases insulin secretion and reduces the absorption of carbohydrates during digestion. It helps in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Apart from this, it also reduces the craving for sweets.
It is also useful in weight loss. It increases metabolism, helps burn fat and controls appetite. In respiratory problems like asthma or cough, it clears the respiratory tract and makes breathing easier. Jaggery also helps dissolve kidney stones and reduce infections by increasing urine production.
Apart from this, it strengthens the liver, is beneficial in jaundice, reduces swelling, boils or irritation on the skin and helps in quick healing of wounds. It is also beneficial for the heart, it reduces bad cholesterol and increases good cholesterol. Some people also use it for snakebite, vomiting, eye disorders, bleeding, hair and fever.
Among the home remedies, you can take dry jaggery leaves powder (4-6 grams) or fresh leaves juice (25-30 ml) in the morning on an empty stomach. Chewing fresh leaves is beneficial to reduce the desire to eat sweets. It is also useful to apply it directly on snakebite or skin.
Gudmar can also be used in combination with other herbs like bitter gourd, jamun, fenugreek and neem. It is beneficial in both diabetes and obesity.
