New Delhi, February 26 (IANS). With the onset of summer the body rushes towards cold beverages. You feel like drinking everything cold and fresh.

In summer, buttermilk is consumed more to maintain body temperature and to enhance taste, but buttermilk is not just a beverage, rather it is said to balance digestion and keep tridosha Vata, Pitta and Kapha in balance.

In Ayurveda, buttermilk is considered the most beneficial and effective. If buttermilk is consumed at the right time and in the right proportion, it acts as a medicine for the body. If buttermilk is consumed considering the defects of the body, it provides natural balance to the stomach, fire and the entire body. If the body’s tendency is Vata then some changes are required before consuming buttermilk.

People with vata tendency should consume a pinch of rock salt with cold buttermilk. This does not cause stomach related problems and digestion also remains healthy. Many people have to defecate immediately after consuming buttermilk. In such a situation, consuming it with black salt or rock salt will keep the digestive fire of the stomach healthy.

If the tendency of the body is bile then it would be right to take buttermilk with sugar candy. Bile produces heat in the body. Consumption of buttermilk and sugar candy helps in keeping the body cool. This reduces stomach irritation and excessive acid production and improves digestion.

If the body’s tendency is phlegm then a pinch of dry ginger should be added to buttermilk and consumed. Due to this, phlegm will not come out immediately after drinking buttermilk, sore throat and nose will also not get blocked. This will prevent the digestive fire from dimming. It is clearly stated in Ayurveda that buttermilk or any other beverage is not equally effective for every body. If beverages or any other food item is consumed in the right manner, food becomes medicine. Therefore, always consume food or beverages only after knowing your body.
