New Delhi, July 1 (IANS). Sudden appearance of pimples on the face a few days before the start of periods for women and girls becomes a cause of trouble. It often happens that the skin looks fine but suddenly a rash appears on the face. People consider it as wrong skin care or lack of cleanliness. However, according to dermatologists, its real reason is hormonal changes occurring inside the body.
The complete cycle of periods is considered to be around 28 days and during this time many hormones in the body go through fluctuations. Initially estrogen levels increase, which keeps the skin clear and balanced. As the cycle progresses, progesterone levels begin to increase, preparing the body for the next phase. But as periods approach, both these hormones start declining, and during this time the effect of testosterone becomes more visible. This imbalance increases the problem of pimples.
According to medical research, increased levels of progesterone make the oil glands of the skin more active. Due to this, natural oil called sebum starts getting produced in large quantities in the skin. Under normal circumstances, this oil keeps the skin soft and protected, but when its production is excessive, it starts clogging the pores. Along with this, slight swelling may also occur in the skin, due to which the oil cannot come out and pimples start forming.
As the effects of testosterone increase, this condition intensifies. When excess oil mixes with dust, dirt and dead skin cells, the pores can become completely clogged. Bacteria start growing rapidly in clogged pores, leading to inflammation and infection. This is why many women get blackheads, whiteheads and even red rashes during this time. The maximum effect is seen on areas like chin and jawline, which doctors also call hormonal acne.
Dermatologists believe that this problem is not entirely external but related to the internal hormonal system. Therefore, just changing the cream or face wash does not always provide the solution. In many cases, body’s metabolism, stress, lack of sleep and diet can also increase this problem because all these things affect the hormonal balance.
This condition can be controlled to a great extent with some simple habits. Regular facial cleansing, avoiding excessive skin contact, and keeping mobile screens clean can reduce the spread of bacteria. Apart from this, staying away from smoking and excessively oily food is also considered helpful. Doctors say that it is important to maintain a balanced body weight, because excess weight can further increase hormonal imbalance.
According to nutritionists, nutrients like zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins A, C, D, and E play an important role in skin health. These elements help in reducing inflammation in the body and in skin repair. Seafood, nuts, green vegetables, dairy products and fruits should be part of a balanced diet.
