New Delhi, April 15 (IANS). Yoga is not just physical exercise but the ancient Indian science of holistic balance of mind, body and spirit. The importance of yoga has increased further amid increasing stress in modern lifestyle and physical problems like weak spine. One of these advanced and powerful asanas is ‘Purna Bhujangasana’.
‘Purna Bhujangasana’ is one such yoga asana which shows the posture of fully spreading its hood like a snake. Its regular practice helps in making the spine extremely flexible and strong.
Purna Bhujangasana is primarily a deep twisting posture of the spine. In this, going beyond the normal Bhujangasana, an attempt is made to bend the knees and bring the feet towards the head, due to which a complete arch is formed in the spine. In ancient yoga texts it is considered especially important for awakening Kundalini energy and health of internal organs.
According to the Ministry of AYUSH, Purna Bhujangasana is very beneficial in making the spine flexible and strong, reducing belly fat, reducing stress and for the health of lungs and heart. It provides relief from constipation by stimulating the stomach organs.
Yoga experts say that this asana should be done carefully and beginners should do it only under the supervision of an expert. To do this, first lie down on your stomach on the yoga mat. Keep the palms near the shoulders. While inhaling, raise the chest, neck and head, bend the elbows slightly and pull the shoulders back. After this, bend your knees and raise your toes. Stretch your head and neck back and try to touch your head with your feet. Stay in this posture for as long as comfortably possible without putting pressure on the body. After this, slowly come back to Shavasana position. Lie down comfortably, take deep breaths and allow your heart rate and breathing to return to normal.
Do not do this if you have severe back pain. Also, pregnant women and people with stomach ulcers must consult a doctor before doing this.
