Belagavi, May 22 (IANS). A well-known doctor suffering from lung cancer committed suicide by shooting himself at his home in Belagavi city on Friday.
The deceased has been identified as Dr. Dinesh Bhatkal. He had worked with KLE Institute for 40 years. According to the police, Dinesh was working as an administrator in a hospital run by KLE Institute.
Dinesh was originally from Ankola town in Karwar district and had recently settled in Belagavi. He was undergoing treatment for lung cancer at KLE Hospital.
Police said that the doctor went to the gallery of his house in the morning and shot himself in the head. Police suspect that he took the extreme step because he could not bear the unbearable pain caused by the disease.
Police further said that the doctor had sent messages on WhatsApp to KLE honorary working president Prabhakar Kore and Dr. Kerur, who was treating him.
In his message to Prabhakar Kore, he reportedly wrote that you have helped me all these years. However, I am going through a lot of pain and under the circumstances I have taken this difficult decision. This is my personal decision. Please help my family and also inform the city police commissioner.
Four months ago he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He often talked about his troubles with his friends.
Police have recovered those messages and are investigating the matter.
It is noteworthy that Dr. MU Nikita, a 23-year-old Ayurvedic doctor, resident of Basava Layout, had committed suicide on April 26 at Holalkere in Chitradurga district. She was deeply troubled by the rumors linking her name with an Ayurvedic medical college professor.
She had alleged that her friends and the professor’s wife were harassing her because of rumors spread about her alleged relationship with the professor.
In another shocking incident, a doctor from Karwar district allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with a double-barreled gun at his home in January 2026. It is being said that he was under mental stress after facing online criticism over an unverified viral video.
According to the police, in that video the doctor was accused of giving expired medicine to a patient. However, there was no confirmation of this allegation. Despite this, the video spread quickly on social media and many people criticized and abused the doctor online, which had a deep impact on his mental health.
