New Delhi, March 6 (IANS). Menopause is a time in women’s lives which people often see as a period of change. It usually occurs between the ages of 45 to 55, when hormonal changes begin in the body and periods do not occur continuously for 12 months. Although this is a natural process, its effects can be seen on both the body and mind, so it is very important to understand this change.
The biggest change during menopause is hormonal. The levels of estrogen and progesterone hormones in the body gradually decrease. This change is not limited to just stopping the menstrual cycle. Due to hormonal deficiency, mood swings, irritability and sleep problems become common. Many women do not sleep well at night or wake up early. In Ayurveda, it is linked to the imbalance of Vata dosha, and to control it, meditation and exercise along with a warm and nutritious diet are recommended.
The effects of estrogen are related to bones and heart. This hormone helps in maintaining the strength of bones. After menopause, bone density starts decreasing due to lack of estrogen. This increases the risk of osteoporosis and fractures in women. It also has an effect on the heart, because estrogen helps protect the heart and blood vessels. Its deficiency reduces control over blood pressure and cholesterol and can increase the risk of heart diseases, so experts always recommend a balanced diet, regular exercise and periodic health checkups.
Skin and hair are also affected during menopause. Due to lack of estrogen, collagen protein starts being produced less, due to which the skin feels thin and dry. Hair fall may increase and their shine decreases. In Ayurveda, it is advised to include nutrients like sesame, flaxseed, fenugreek and green vegetables in the diet. These not only nourish skin and hair, but are also beneficial for bones and heart.
