Kalaburagi, July 10 (IANS). More than 45 students of a hostel in Dandoti village in Chittapur taluk of Kalaburagi district of Karnataka fell ill after having dinner. The incident took place at Morarji Desai Residential Hostel, where students from classes 6 to 10 live. A few hours after eating the food, students started complaining of stomach ache, vomiting and diarrhoea, following which there was chaos in the hostel premises.
According to the information, rice and sambar were given to the students in the hostel mess on Thursday night. After having food, the health of many students suddenly started deteriorating. The students complained of severe stomach pain, cramps and continuous vomiting. Within no time, more than 45 students fell ill.
When the situation became serious, the hostel management immediately informed the local administration and health department. After this the sick students were admitted to different hospitals for treatment. Of these, more than 35 students have been admitted to Chittapur Taluk Hospital, 5 students have been admitted to Malkhed Hospital and one student has been admitted to Dandoti Hospital. First aid to many students was also given at Dandoti Primary Health Centre.
After receiving information about the incident, Kalaburagi District Deputy Commissioner Ikramullah Sharif and District Health Officer (DHO) Sharanbasappa reached the spot and took stock of the situation. Apart from this, District Officer of Minority Department Sangamesh also inspected the hostel and took information about the arrangements.
In the initial investigation, the reason for the students falling ill is believed to be contaminated water or poor quality food. It is being told that the students in the hostel were using water from a tanker. It is feared that the health of the students deteriorated due to drinking contaminated water or some kind of disturbance in the food.
After the incident, a large number of parents reached the hostel and expressed concern about the health of their children. The administration has instructed health officials to monitor the condition of the students. The students admitted in the hospitals are undergoing treatment and their condition is being continuously monitored.
Officials have said that the matter is being investigated. Samples of water and food can be taken and their quality can be tested, so that the real reasons behind students falling ill can be ascertained.
