Puri, April 26 (IANS). There is a special drink in the traditional kitchen of Odisha which not only cools the body in summers but is also considered very beneficial for health. It is called Tanka Torani. This drink is given as Mahaprasad in the temple of Lord Jagannath and the special thing is that it is prepared from one day old ripe rice.
Generally, Tanka Torani is preferred during the summer season, because it keeps the body cool from inside and also quenches thirst well. That is why it is prepared and drunk with great enthusiasm even today in the homes of Odisha.
The process of making Tanka Torani is also very interesting. In this, one day old cooked rice is put in water and left overnight, so that light fermentation can occur. After this, the next day it is mashed well with hands and curd is mixed in it.
To further enhance its taste, various things are added to it like mango ginger, curry leaves, lemon pieces, green chillies, coriander leaves, roasted cumin powder and black salt. Some people dilute it further by adding water so that it becomes a cool and light drink.
When it is ready, its taste is slightly sour, slightly spicy and very refreshing. It provides relief to the body in summer and also reduces fatigue.
Not only the taste, Tanka Torani is also very beneficial for health, as it is a natural probiotic drink, which helps in increasing the good bacteria in the stomach. This improves digestion and reduces stomach related problems like gas or heaviness.
