To control obesity and diabetes worldwide, many companies have developed GLP-1 and semaglutide drugs, which control diabetes and help overweight people to lose weight. Monzaro and Vagovi have been officially launched in India, but now it is reported that the Central Drug Standards Control Organization (CDSCO) has approved Novo Nordisk’s blockbuster medicine, ozmpic (semaglutide injection) for use in India. This approval, which is valid until 26 September, 2025, allows the use of ozmpic with diet and exercise for type 2 diabetes.

How many times will this medicine be taken in a week?

Given the increasing cases of diabetes and obesity in India, the ozmpic injection launched will be taken once a week. The company says that ozmpic helps control blood sugar, and clinical studies have shown that it can be beneficial for the heart and kidneys. The ozmpic is currently not approved to treat obesity. When you eat and your blood sugar level increases, the ozmpic body indicates leaving more insulin, which reduces blood sugar levels. The ozmpic food also helps to digest gradually, which does not cause a sudden increase in the sugars and you feel full for a long time. This is the reason that many people weigh down. Ozmpic (semaglutide) injection is 0.5 mg, 1 mg, or 2 mg is an injectionable prescription drug that is used with diet and exercise to improve type 2 diabetes and high blood sugar (glucose).

Wagovi received approval to treat obesity

Novo Nordisk’s vegovi, an approved drug for the treatment of obesity, was launched in India a few months ago. Ellie Lily’s Monjaro injection, which can be used to treat both diabetes and obesity, was also launched in March 2025.

What did the company say?

Vikrant Shrotriya, managing director of Novo Nordisk India, said, “Ozapics not only helps in controlling sugar levels, but also helps in weight loss and reducing the risks related to heart and kidney. This means that it can provide many benefits to patients.” He said that about 100 million people in India are suffering from diabetes, while more than 25 crore people are suffering from obesity or more weight. Heart disease is one of the major causes of death in the country. As a result, the need for quality drugs increases even more.

The company already sells ribelsus (an oral form of semaglutide) and vegovi. The company says that the involvement of the ozmpic will make Novo Nordisk’s portfolio stronger. Its benefits include sugar control, weight loss and benefits associated with heart and kidneys, which make it a favorite medicine for doctors. He said that old remedies such as DPP-4 inhibitor, SGLT-2 inhibitors and insulin will continue to be used, but GLP-1 class drugs are also increasing importance.

7.2 million people have used it

The company claims that more than 7.2 million people worldwide are using ozmpic. The company believes that as awareness among doctors and patients will increase, its use in India will increase rapidly. There will be no obstruction in its supply in India and the company is soon preparing to introduce medicines for new diseases like heart, kidney, Alzheimer’s and liver disease (MASH).
