New Delhi, May 2 (IANS). After the birth of a child, many changes take place in the mother’s body and during this time the process of producing milk in the breasts begins. Due to milk not being able to come out properly, there is heaviness, pain and swelling in the breasts, which is called breast engorgement.
In this condition the breasts become hard, heavy and sensitive. Sometimes there is so much pain that it becomes difficult for the mother to even feed the child. But this does not mean that breastfeeding should be stopped. On the contrary, frequent and correct breastfeeding helps in reducing this problem.
If the baby is not able to drink milk properly, then it is necessary to express the milk gently so that the pressure in the breasts can be reduced. Massaging slowly also provides relief. Along with this, it is very important to take care of the cleanliness of the breasts. Maintaining cleanliness before and after every feeding reduces the risk of infection.
Sometimes, if care is not taken, this problem can develop into mastitis. In this, the skin of the breasts becomes red, there is severe pain and fever may also occur. This condition can be serious and it becomes necessary to consult a doctor. In some cases, there may be discharge like pus or blood in the breast, which should not be ignored at all.
Apart from this, cracked nipples are also a common problem, which can occur due to wrong feeding or dryness. In such a situation, using natural oil or cream recommended by the doctor can provide relief.
Apart from this, it is also important to always wear loose cotton clothes, keep the breasts clean and dry and avoid any kind of synthetic clothes.
