New Delhi, October 26 (IANS). Often diabetes sufferers face dilemma regarding what to eat and what not. For such people, pear is no less than a boon. A study also confirms this.

According to the information revealed on Saturday, pear, known for its good taste and medicinal properties, is rich in fiber, antioxidants and many essential vitamins and minerals like vitamin C, vitamin K and potassium.

This fruit also supports healthy cholesterol levels and helps protect against heart diseases. Along with this, it is also helpful in controlling blood sugar level.

Pear contains rich amounts of potassium, which helps in maintaining normal blood pressure and protecting against heart diseases. The anthocyanin compound present in pear also protects against coronary artery disease. Research published in Frontiers in Nutrition shows that eating pears regularly reduces the risk of stroke.

Pear comes in the low glycemic index category and can serve as a fresh snack for people with type 2 diabetes. According to the report of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, eating pears daily can reduce the risk of diabetes. The antioxidant anthocyanin present in the fruit helps prevent sudden increases in blood sugar.

This fruit also contains essential minerals like copper and potassium, which help in controlling blood cholesterol. Open Heart Journal reported on the basis of a trial that in patients with high cholesterol who were given 5 mg copper supplement daily for 45 days, the levels of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein and triglycerides decreased, while the level of high-density lipoprotein increased. In this way, eating pears regularly can help in reducing bad cholesterol.

The benefits of pear do not end here. It can also reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia. They are rich in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory compounds and flavonoids like quercetin and kaempferol, which protect brain cells from oxidative stress and inflammation. A study found that eating pears reduces the risk of dementia.

Eating a pear daily can reduce the risk of cancer. This fruit contains strong anti-cancer compounds. A review published in BMC Complementary Medicines and Therapies (2021) found that flavonoids and terpenoids present in pears have anti-cancer and anti-tumor properties.
