New Delhi, April 28 (IANS). The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is likely to release the results of the sixth phase of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-6) soon.

NFHS is one of the largest and widest sample surveys conducted in the country. NFHS-6 covered 6,79,238 families from states and union territories of the country. The survey, conducted during 2023-24, aims to collect high-quality data on health and related indicators to help policy makers and program managers set benchmarks in India’s health sector and assess progress over time.

NFHS-6 uses a completely digital medium for data collection, using Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) software. It has built-in provisions to detect errors in real time, investigate and thoroughly review the data. Data collection included rigorous field observation and monitoring. Multi-layered checks, extensive validation and review have been carried out during data processing to ensure accuracy, consistency and reliability of the estimates. The fifth phase of NFHS was conducted in 2019-21.

The National Family Health Survey (NFHS) is a comprehensive, multi-stage household survey conducted across India to collect detailed population, health and nutrition information. The survey is conducted by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India, with the Mumbai-based International Institute of Population Sciences (IIPS) as the nodal agency.

The main objective of the NFHS is to provide high quality, nationally representative data on key indicators such as fertility rates, mortality rates, family planning, maternal and child health, immunization, nutrition, anemia, non-communicable diseases, HIV-related behaviors and women’s empowerment. These data serve as an important evidence base for policy making, program evaluation and monitoring of national and global health and development goals at the state and district level.
