Kathua, April 11 (IANS). A major step has been taken towards strengthening the health sector in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir. Tata Memorial Center has decided to upgrade the cancer care facilities at the Government Medical College (DMC), Kathua, including advanced radiation treatment. Union Minister Jitendra Singh gave this information on Saturday.
Under this collaboration, advanced cancer treatment facilities including state-of-the-art radiation therapy will be developed at Government Medical College, Kathua. With this, patients of Jammu and Kashmir and surrounding areas will not have to go to big cities and better treatment will be available at the local level. The Union Minister said that MD course will also be started in GMC Kathua from this year itself. This will not only promote medical education but will also increase the availability of specialist doctors in the field.
Jitendra Singh also pointed out that Udhampur-Kathua-Doda Lok Sabha constituency is perhaps the only region in the country where the Central Government has approved three medical colleges almost simultaneously. GMC Kathua, started in the year 2019, is moving forward on the path of rapid development. Additionally, another Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between GMC Kathua and Institute of Integrative Medicine (IIIM), Jammu.
“Tata Memorial Center Mumbai will upgrade cancer care facilities at Government Medical College (GMC) Kathua, including advanced radiation treatment,” Jitendra Singh said in a post on social media platform X.
He said, “MD course will start in GMC Kathua from this year. Udhampur-Kathua-Doda is perhaps the only Lok Sabha constituency in the country which has been given three medical colleges by the Central Government almost at the same time. GMC Kathua, started in 2019, has grown rapidly since then.”
The Union Minister further said that another MoU has been signed between GMC Kathua and Institute of Integrative Medicine (IIIM) Jammu. This MoU is in line with the existing global trend of collaboration between medical institutions and leading research organizations to help translate scientific research into clinical applications.
