Washington, October 27 (IANS). Research was conducted on the increasing trend of suicide in America. Recently, when the results of this study came out, it was found that seasonal allergies can increase the risk of suicide.
According to the US CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), about 81 million Americans – that’s about one in four adults and one in five children – suffer from seasonal allergies each year. To better understand this, researchers at Wayne State University analyzed suicide data by collecting daily pollen counts (daily pollen counts) from 34 US metro sites from 2006 to 2018.
What they discovered in the study was shocking. With the increasing level of Palin, the suicide rate was also found to be increasing.
Suicide rates increased by 5.5 percent on days with moderate amounts of pollen (collected pollen) compared to days with little or no pollen.
“At the highest Pauline level, we saw an increase of up to 7.4 percent in suicide,” Shushan Danagoulian, who led the study, said in a press release.
He further said, “What is more worrying is that among people who had pre-existing mental health problems or who were undergoing treatment, the suicidal tendency increased further during high-pollen days. This rate reached 8.6 percent.”
The suicide rate in America increased by 37 percent between 2007 and 2018. In 2023 alone, more than 15 lakh people tried to commit suicide. More than 49,000 Americans took their own lives, making suicide the 11th leading cause of death nationwide.
Although symptoms like itchy eyes, runny nose and cough may seem minor, researchers say that seasonal allergies can prove to be dangerous. This is because it disturbs sleep, distracts attention, which often spoils the mood. These are all known risk factors for suicide.
