Salem (Tamil Nadu), February 13 (IANS). A man collapsed and died of suspected heart attack during a political program of Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) in Salem, Tamil Nadu on Friday.
The deceased has been identified as Siraj, 37, a migrant laborer from North India. He was said to be suffering from heart disease and had undergone heart surgery about a year ago.
According to the police, he fainted while standing at the crowded venue of the event at KVP Garden near Sheelanayakkanpatti. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Salem Police have registered a case and are investigating the matter, although initial reports suggest that the incident occurred due to natural causes.
The incident occurred when actor-turned-politician Vijay was addressing party workers.
Despite this tragic incident, the meeting continued with tight security and medical arrangements.
In his speech, Vijay said that he has not come to ask for votes, but to seek justice for the people of Tamil Nadu. He accused the ruling DMK of trying to stop his party from growing by not providing space for meetings, while allowing other political parties to function freely.
Referring to the election symbol of his TVK party, he said that if they give you money, take it, it is your money. But press the whistle symbol while voting.
Responding to critics who questioned his administrative experience, Vijay said that traditional politicians only have experience in looting public money.
Recalling leaders like CN Annadurai, MG Ramachandran and Jayalalitha, Vijay said every major political force had at one time started without experience.
He further said that honesty and love for the people is enough.
