New Delhi, June 11 (IANS). India is growing rapidly in the biopharmaceutical sector and has the potential to play a global leadership role in this sector in the coming years. Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers Anupriya Patel said that under the government’s ‘BioPharma Shakti’ initiative, a target has been set to launch 100 new biologics by the year 2047. This initiative will play an important role in building a developed India and a healthy India.
Addressing the Second Pharma Summit and Awards 2026 held in New Delhi, Anupriya Patel said that biopharmaceuticals are the future of modern healthcare services. He expressed confidence that India is in a position to create a strong identity at the global level in this field. The government is continuously working to strengthen manufacturing, innovation, clinical research and regulatory capabilities.
The Union Minister said that the demand for biologics based medicines is increasing rapidly across the world. It is estimated that by the year 2031, the share of biologics in the prescription drugs market may reach about 40 percent. In such a situation, it is important for India to maintain its strong position in generic medicines as well as focus on the development of new generation biologics medicines.
He called upon the industry to increase investment and research in the field of biologics and biosimilars. According to him, the government has launched several policy and financial support programs to strengthen the pharmaceutical value chain, thereby promoting innovation in the country.
Anupriya Patel said that several schemes of the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council, such as Biotech Ignition Grant, SBIRI and BIPP, are supporting new technologies and industry-led research. Apart from this, initiatives like PRIP scheme and National Biopharma Mission are also laying a strong foundation for the development of advanced medical technologies in the country.
In the program, Secretary of the Pharmaceuticals Department, Manoj Joshi also highlighted the possibilities of the biopharma sector. He said that India needs to further strengthen pharmaceutical research, innovation, clinical research and supply chain. According to him, the ‘BioPharma Shakti’ initiative is an important step towards making India a global hub for the development and production of high quality biologics and biosimilars.
During the ceremony, Anupriya Patel also presented ‘Pharma Excellence Awards’ to companies and institutions making outstanding contributions to the pharmaceutical sector.
