New Delhi, January 19 (IANS). Due to lack of proper care during winter season, people often complain of hair fall and thinning. Both Ayurveda and science agree that proper nutrition, moisture and blood circulation are essential for hair health.

In winter, people wear woolen caps and mufflers to protect themselves from the cold, but it also poses a hidden threat to the hair. Wearing a woolen cap for a long time causes friction in the hair, increases tangling and also increases the chances of breakage. Its effect is so much that the length of the hair slows down and its roots start feeling weak.

Less sunlight in winter also affects hair growth. According to science, Vitamin D obtained from sun rays activates the hair follicles. In winter there is often less sunlight and people remain locked in their homes.

Due to this, there is deficiency of Vitamin D and nutrition does not reach the hair roots. The result is that hair grows slowly and the problem of hair fall increases. It is also believed in Ayurveda that sunlight is necessary for the energy and strength of hair. Therefore, experts recommend that sitting in the sun daily, even for a short time, in winter is beneficial for the hair.

Dry air also hinders hair growth in this season. There is very little humidity in the air in winter, which takes away the natural moisture of the hair. Due to this, the hair roots become weak and the possibility of breakage increases. The scalp also becomes dry, due to which there is lack of nutrition and hair does not grow quickly. Research has shown that air with low humidity weakens the structure of the hair and makes them thin.

Bathing with hot water in winter also becomes dangerous for the hair. People take long baths with hot water to escape the cold, but this removes the natural oils from the hair and damages the cuticles. Due to this, hair becomes weak, breaks quickly and becomes thin. Also, excessive use of hot appliances like dryers and straighteners slows down hair growth and reduces their strength.

Decrease in blood circulation also affects hair growth in winter. Due to cold air, the blood vessels of the scalp shrink and sufficient oxygen and nutrients do not reach the roots. In Ayurveda, this is also considered the cause of hair weakness. Because of this, hair starts breaking from the middle, falls, and does not remain healthy for a long time.
