New Delhi, May 28 (IANS). In summer, people who are troubled by the scorching heat outside, as soon as they reach home, the first thing they do is turn on the air conditioner. But it often happens that even after turning on the AC, the room does not cool down immediately. Many times people think that perhaps the AC has broken down or its cooling has reduced, whereas there are many scientific reasons behind it. Actually, things like hot air accumulated inside the room, heat of walls, closed environment and poor air flow slow down the cooling of the AC. If AC is used properly and some basic things of the room are taken care of, then cooling can be better.
According to scientists, the temperature of the room is determined by the heat stored in the walls, floor, furniture and ceiling. When the sun shines throughout the day, the things in the room store the heat inside themselves. In such a situation, as soon as the AC is switched on, it has to cool not only the air but also all these hot surfaces. This is the reason why the AC has to work harder in the beginning and it takes time to cool down.
Experts say that before turning on the AC, if the ceiling fan is turned on for a few minutes and the windows or doors of the room are opened for a while, then it is directly beneficial. In scientific language it is called air circulation. When the fan runs, the hot air trapped in the room rapidly rotates here and there and starts coming out. Due to this the temperature inside the room reduces slightly. With the arrival of fresh air, a balance is created between hot and cold air, after which the AC has to work less hard and it starts providing cooling faster.
Cleaning the air filter also plays a big role in the performance of the AC. The filter installed inside the AC works to prevent dust and small particles present in the air. But due to continuous use, dust starts accumulating in it. When the filter becomes dirty, the air path becomes narrow and the cool air does not reach the room in the right amount. Therefore, it is necessary to clean the filter every two weeks, so that the air flow can be better.
The outdoor unit of AC should also not be ignored. This unit works to take out the heat from the room. If dust, leaves or garbage accumulates around it, then there is difficulty in the hot air coming out. Due to this, the AC compressor works under higher pressure and electricity consumption also increases. Besides, it is also necessary to check the gas level from time to time, because if the gas is less, the AC is not able to provide adequate cooling.
Room setting also has a direct impact on cooling. Many people turn on the AC at 16 or 18 degrees to get coolness quickly, but according to scientists, a temperature around 24 degrees Celsius is considered the most balanced. At this temperature the AC consumes less electricity and the body also gets comfortable coolness.
