New Delhi, March 10 (IANS). There are some asanas in yoga, which provide strength and flexibility to the body. ‘Urdhwa Mukha Svanasana’ is one of those effective yoga asanas, whose regular practice brings vigor and energy to the body.
‘Urdhva Mukha Svanasana’ is a Sanskrit word. In common parlance, it is also called ‘Upward Facing Dog Pose’. This asana strengthens the spine and expands the chest and lungs. Regular exercise increases the strength of back, shoulders and arms and also reduces mental stress.
This asana is a major part of Surya Namaskar. It is done in the 7th step of Surya Namaskar (in place of or after Bhujangasana), which comes after Ashtanga Namaskar. It stretches the front part of the body and strengthens the spinal muscles. It opens the chest and is known for strengthening the waist.
The Ministry of AYUSH has highlighted its importance. He has described it as excellent for spinal health. According to him, its practice reduces fatigue and strengthens the spine, arms and shoulders. Besides, it is also considered beneficial in improving digestion and asthma.
Regular practice of ‘Urdhva Mukha Svanasana’ strengthens the back muscles and brings flexibility in the shoulders. This asana is especially beneficial for those who work sitting in one position for a long time.
This asana is beneficial not only for physical but also for mental health. At the same time, practicing this asana on an empty stomach in the morning maintains freshness and energy throughout the day.
However, if you have any old injury in knee, hip or waist, consult a doctor or a yoga expert before practicing. Pregnant women should do this asana only in modified form.
