Mercatasana is a Sanskrit name derived from ‘Merkat’ meaning monkey. In this asana, the posture of the body becomes like that of a monkey, hence it is also called monkey asana. It increases flexibility by bending the spine. The practice of Marktasana is very useful in reducing fat in the stomach, waist and thighs.
Practicing Marktasana provides many benefits. With its regular practice, the spinal column becomes strong and flexible, thereby eliminating back deformities. Its practice also provides relief from waist pain and back pain caused by sitting for a long time. To practice Marktasana, lie down on your back on the ground. Spread both hands at shoulder level. Bend the right knee and move it towards the left hand, while turning the head to the right. Wait for a few seconds and keep breathing normal. Then repeat on the other side. Do this 5 to 10 times daily.
