New Delhi, December 6 (IANS). Type 1 diabetes is a condition in which the body almost completely stops producing insulin. Without insulin, glucose does not enter the cells and starts accumulating in the blood. This disease often appears in children and adolescents.

This is called an autoimmune disorder, that is, the body attacks its own beta cells of the pancreas. Gradually the insulin level decreases and eventually becomes almost zero. Sometimes a little insulin is produced in the beginning.

The immune system protects against viruses and bacteria under normal circumstances, but in type 1 it mistakes the beta cells for harmful ones. This is called autoimmune attack. In this process, immune cells gradually destroy beta cells.

Genetic predisposition is considered to be the biggest reason. If someone in the family has type 1, the risk increases. Some viral infections and childhood viruses can confuse the immune system.

Early symptoms include extreme thirst, frequent urination, rapid weight loss, increased appetite, dry skin, fatigue, mood swings, delayed wound healing and blurred vision. Vomiting and stomach pain may also occur in children.

Fasting blood sugar, PPBS, HbA1c and C-peptide test are done for identification. Autoantibody tests (GAD, IA2, ZNT8) confirm type 1. In case of DKA, ketones increase in blood and urine.

Ayurveda considers it to be due to puberty-related diabetes and metal-related decay. Lack of vigor, weakness of agni and immune imbalance give rise to it.

Home remedies include keeping meals regular and light. Give lukewarm water. Reduce cold items and packaged foods. Do light yoga and stretching. Get enough sleep. For Ayurvedic support, medicines like Vasavaleh, Amalaki Churna, Gudduchi Satva and Shatavari Ghrit can be given on the advice of the Vaidya. Remember the main treatment is insulin. Home remedies are only helpful.
