New Delhi, May 7 (IANS). Symptoms like frequent feeling of fatigue, weakness and lack of blood in the body can sometimes be a sign of a serious blood related disease. Ignoring these symptoms can prove dangerous. Timely identification and awareness of the blood related genetic disorder Thalassemia is extremely important. World Thalassemia Day is celebrated every year on 8 May.

On this day, efforts are made to spread awareness about Thalassemia disease, support patients and honor their daily struggles. According to the National Health Mission (NHM), Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder in which the body is unable to produce hemoglobin in sufficient quantities. Due to this, the person has to face constant anemia, fatigue and weakness.

Thalassemia is mainly of two types – Thalassemia minor in which the person is a carrier of the disease, but can usually live a normal life. Often its symptoms are mild or not visible. At the same time, Thalassemia Major is a serious form of the disease. In this the patient requires frequent blood transfusions. Life becomes difficult without regular medical care, medicines and special treatments.

The main objective of World Thalassemia Day is to motivate the youth to get thalassemia test done before marriage. If both partners are carriers of thalassemia minor then the chances of their child having thalassemia major increases. This problem can be prevented by timely investigation.

In such a situation, experts appeal that if symptoms like fatigue, weakness, pale skin, loss of appetite or falling ill again and again are seen, then get checked by a doctor immediately. With timely correct information and awareness, the effects and complications of Thalassemia can be reduced to a great extent.

Thalassemia major patients require regular blood transfusion, hence promoting voluntary blood donation is also an important objective of this day. One unit of blood can help save the lives of many patients. Awareness is the solution.

Thalassemia cannot be completely cured, but with timely detection, regular treatment and proper care, patients can lead a normal life. Health experts say that families, especially youth of marriageable age, should be aware about this disease.
