New Delhi, June 19 (IANS). If you want to remain mentally and physically healthy, then definitely include a chapter of yoga in your daily routine. By doing this you can live a better life. Many events are organized in India on International Yoga Day on 21 June. Not only in India, but also in foreign countries, people are becoming very aware about yoga. Uma Kumar, head of the rheumatology department of Delhi AIIMS, believes that everyone should practice yoga.
How does yoga affect diseases? Uma Kumar talked to IANS regarding this.
Dr. Uma Kumar said that generally we have seen the effect of yoga on patients with rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia in different aspects. We have also seen the effect of medicines on those patients who were also doing yoga. We found that patients responded to the drug, were very happy, had good sleep, had less negativity, had good quality of life, and had significant pain relief. The second thing is that if we talk about the cellular level, then the epigenetic changes we were talking about were seen less in them, gene expression and inflammatory markers were also seen less in them. And secondly, less oxidative stress was seen in the patients who were also taking medicines. Cellular function also improved, as we say, mitochondrial function also improved. So overall, yoga not only improves physical health but also improves mental health.
Referring to arthritis patients, she said that I would say that it is very important, because yoga gives us all the things that we have just talked about. And living a good life is very important for any person, whether you are traveling with a group or with someone else. So yoga makes a huge contribution in this. So not just for arthritis patients, but you, I, all of us should include yoga in our life regularly and definitely take out some time for it.
Another doctor from Delhi AIIMS told about the benefits of yoga in arthritis patients that yoga improves flexibility, which we have seen from the goniometer. We record how many joints we are able to move. So we saw that after yoga, the swelling in these patients also reduced and the range of motion, i.e. how much they were able to move their joints, also improved.
Regarding joint pain, he said that it has been seen in the research of Delhi AIIMS that if we do supervised yoga (yoga under someone’s supervision) then it provides relief in joint pain, it is not that we do any yoga exercise. If we exercise in a supervised manner, we get better relief. Definitely a lot of improvement. The muscles of the joints get relief.
He said that Bhujangasana and Shalabhasana are recommended for patients with back pain, along with light stretching exercises, body rotation and loosening exercises for the neck. These exercises provide relaxation to the muscles and improve the mobility of the body.
He said that the initiative that the Central Government is taking regarding Yoga is a very good initiative, which was started in our own country, hence we should do this exercise and everyone should do it. We should do yoga as much as possible in our free time.
