A historic moment has come for Tata Group-owned Air India. After a long wait of almost 8 years, the airline has received its first new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft straight from the Boeing factory. The aircraft landed at Delhi’s IGI Airport on January 11, 2026, making it the first wide-body aircraft inducted into the fleet after the airline’s acquisition by Tata. This arrival will prove to be a milestone in Air India’s transformation plan.
This aircraft reached India after a 17-hour non-stop flight from Seattle to Delhi, passengers will get excellent facilities in all three classes.
The registration number of this new aircraft is VT-AWA. It took off from Seattle, USA and touched the Indian soil after completing a long non-stop journey of 16 hours 58 minutes. This Dreamliner was delivered to Boeing’s Everett factory on January 7, 2026. Keeping in mind the facilities of the passengers, a total of 296 seats have been installed in it, which are divided into business, premium economy and economy class. Air India is preparing to launch this aircraft on its international long-haul routes from February 2026, which will provide a lot of relief to passengers traveling long distances.
For the first time since 2017, this special ‘line-fit’ aircraft was designed as per the company’s choice and specifications.
This aircraft is very special for Air India as it is a ‘line-fit’ aircraft. This means that it is completely built in Boeing’s factory as per Air India’s own specifications and requirements. Before this, the last such aircraft had arrived in October 2017. This new ship has a completely new and custom interior design, details of which will be shared soon. The delivery is part of an order for 220 Boeing aircraft due in 2023 and is the 52nd aircraft in that order, but the first delivery in the wide-body category.
Old aircraft are also being rejuvenated, by the end of the year 60 percent of the fleet will see modern and new interior.
Air India is on a mission to completely transform its fleet. A total of 6 wide-body aircraft (including A350-1000 and B787-9) are scheduled to be delivered in the year 2026. Along with this, the company is also retrofitting its 26 old Boeing 787-8 aircraft, that is, new livery, new seats and new interior are being installed in them. After the merger with Vistara, Air India received 26 Boeing 787-8 and 6 Boeing 787-9 aircraft, taking the total fleet to more than 300 aircraft. The company aims to have 60% of its wide-body fleet have modern interiors by the end of this year.
One of the largest aircraft orders in history, 81 percent of international flights will have upgraded aircraft by the end of 2026
Tata Group had placed a huge order for a total of 570 aircraft (350 Airbus and 220 Boeing) in 2023 to take the airline to greater heights. Of these, 6 Airbus A350 have already joined the fleet, while Air India Express has received 51 Boeing 737-8. The airline’s plan is extremely aggressive. Management estimates that by the end of 2026, 81% of international flights will be operated by these new or retrofitted aircraft, providing a world-class experience to passengers.
