There is a big news for those investing in the stock market. This year also Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) will remain open on Sunday, 1 February 2026. This is being done because Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is going to present the Union Budget 2026-27 in Parliament on the same day. Usually Sunday is the weekly market holiday, but due to the Budget presentation, the exchanges have decided to organize a special live trading session.

market opening and closing time

According to the circular issued by BSE and NSE, market timings on Budget day will remain the same as normal trading days. Along with the equity market, trading will also remain open in the Futures and Options (F&O) and commodity derivatives segments. For the convenience of investors, we have given the complete timetable below:

Session Time Block Deal Session from 8:45 AM Pre-Open Session from 9:00 AM to 9:08 AM Normal Trading from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM

What are the rules regarding settlement?

Even though trading will take place on Sunday, the rules regarding settlement of deals will be slightly different. BSE has clarified that no auction session will be held for T+0 settlement and default settlement on February 1. This day will be considered as ‘Settlement Holiday’. This means that settlement of funds and securities will not take place on Sunday, but will follow working day rules.

Budget will be presented on Sunday after 26 years

This is the first time since 2000 that the Union Budget is being presented on Sunday. Earlier in the year 2015, the then Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had presented the budget on Saturday, and last year in 2025 also the budget came on Saturday only. This will be the ninth consecutive budget of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The Speaker of the Lok Sabha has confirmed that the Finance Minister will start the budget speech in Parliament at 11 am on Sunday. With the market open, investors will be able to react immediately to budget announcements.

Budget session of Parliament and economic survey

The budget session of Parliament will start from January 28 and continue till April 2. However, Parliament will not function on January 29 due to the Beating Retreat ceremony. The Economic Survey is expected to be presented on January 30, just before the Budget. This session will be held in two phases—the first phase will run from January 28 to February 13 and the second phase will run from March 9 to April 2. All these dates are very important for the market.

When will the market remain closed in the year 2026?

A total of 16 holidays are scheduled for the stock market (NSE and BSE) in the year 2026. The market was closed on January 11 due to Mumbai civic elections at the beginning of the year. Now the next holiday will be on 26th January on the occasion of Republic Day. After this, in the first half of the year, markets will remain closed on Holi (3 March), Ram Navami (26 March), Mahavir Jayanti (31 March) and Good Friday (3 April). Investors should make their trading plans keeping these holidays in mind.
