Delhi Police has registered a case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), Explosives Act and various sections of the Indian Justice Code in connection with the blast that took place near the city’s historic Red Fort.

“A case has been registered at Kotwali police station under sections 16, 18 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and various sections of the Explosives Act and BNS,” Delhi Police said. At least eight people lost their lives and several others were injured in the blast.

Earlier, speaking to ANI, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that a Hyundai i20 car exploded at Subhash Marg traffic signal near Red Fort in Delhi at 7 pm on Monday and some pedestrians were injured and some vehicles were damaged in the blast.

Amit Shah said, “A Hyundai i20 car exploded at Subhash Marg traffic signal near Red Fort in Delhi today at around 7 pm. Some pedestrians were injured and some vehicles were damaged in the blast. Initial reports indicate that some people have lost their lives. Within 10 minutes of receiving information about the blast, teams from Delhi Crime Branch and Delhi Special Branch reached the spot.”

He said, “I have also spoken to the Delhi Police Commissioner and the in-charge of the Special Branch. The Delhi Police Commissioner and the in-charge of the Special Branch are present at the spot. We are considering all possibilities and will conduct a thorough investigation keeping all possibilities in mind. All options will be investigated immediately and we will present the results to the public.”

Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha earlier said that a slow-moving vehicle stopped at a red light in the area near the Red Fort metro station in the national capital and the vehicle exploded, damaging nearby vehicles.

He said, “Today at around 6.52 pm, a slow moving vehicle stopped at a red light. There was an explosion in that vehicle and due to the explosion nearby vehicles were also damaged. All the agencies, FSL, NIA, are here… Some people have died and some are injured in the incident. The situation is being monitored.”

Government sources said on Monday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi took stock of the situation after the Delhi blast and spoke to Home Minister Amit Shah. Medical Superintendent of LNJP Hospital told ANI that the condition of one of the injured is stable. He said “Fifteen people have been brought to Lok Nayak Hospital. Eight of them died before reaching the hospital. Three are seriously injured. One is undergoing treatment. “His condition is stable.”
