Amidst the increasing tension in the Middle East, a sad news has come for Bhagalpur district of Bihar. Marine engineer Devanandan from Bhagalpur was killed in an attack on an American oil tanker by Iran’s military (IRGC). The incident occurred on March 11, 2026, near Iraqi waters, when Devanandan was performing his duty on the ship. The Government of India and the Ministry of External Affairs are now engaged in the process of bringing back his mortal remains.

Devnandan was a resident of Sanhaula block of Bhagalpur and was working as an engineer on an American oil tanker named Safe Sea Vishnu. On March 11, an Iranian suicide boat targeted the ship near Iraq’s Khor Al Zubair Port. The Indian Embassy officially confirmed his death on 12 March. A total of 28 people were present on the ship at the time of the attack.

Devnandan’s family was informed about this incident on March 12, after which there is mourning in the house. In his last conversation, he had told the family that he was at sea and going for his duty. Following the attack, 15 other Indian crew members on board have been evacuated and kept at a safe location in Basra, Iraq.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs remains in constant touch with the Iraqi authorities. The Iranian military claims that the tanker did not follow the warning. After this attack, a huge jump in the prices of crude oil has been seen in the international market. The shipping company and the embassy are completing the paperwork to send the body to Bihar.
