Goa Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte has categorically rejected any move to ban beef in the state, and has said that culinary freedom and communal harmony are the cornerstone of Goan hospitality, even as the government is working on its vision of turning the state into a spiritual tourism hub, and wants Goa to become the “Kashi of the South”.

The minister’s remarks came in response to a question asked by the media asking whether the spiritual tourism aspirations of the state government would lead to restrictions, especially a ban on beef, which is consumed by many residents and tourists in Goa. Minister Khaunte began his address by emphasizing the state’s unique culture of unity and mutual respect. He highlighted the integrated social fabric where communities participate in each other’s festivals and cuisine.

Khaunte said, “Coming to Goa, I had said in my speech that we live with communal harmony. So whether it is Diwali, Chaturthi or Christmas, we visit each other’s houses and enjoy each other’s cuisine as per our choice.”

Directly addressing concerns about tourism restrictions, Minister Khounte gave clear assurances that the State will not impose any dietary restrictions on visitors, and will ensure that a wide range of options are available.

He stressed that the government’s approach is to provide options rather than restrictions. “On my part, representing the Government of Goa, as a part of Goa, to promote Goa tourism, tourists coming to Goa have many options to choose from, taste and eat as there is no restriction on anything, but we respect their food,” the minister said.

The Minister emphasized the non-mandatory nature of his tourism offerings, and guaranteed individual choice. “I don’t want you to come and you are forced to eat, we won’t say that, so ‘eat what you want and enjoy’,” he said. The Minister concluded his statement by linking the principle of freedom and choice to the core Indian value of hospitality.

“And take back good memories with you. That’s why we say Atithi Devo Bhava (Guest is God) and Seva Devo Bhava (Service is God),” he concluded, giving a clear message that Goa’s inclusive and welcoming environment, punctuated by diverse culinary experiences, remains unchanged despite its efforts for spiritual tourism development. This assurance resonated with tourists and stakeholders in the state’s vital tourism sector. Will be helpful in maintaining confidence.
