Human Rights Watch (HRW) has made serious allegations against Iran in its latest report. According to reports, in the first week of March, the Iranian military deliberately targeted two civilian merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The international organization has classified these attacks as ‘war crimes’. After this incident, tension has increased on sea routes and concerns are being raised about the safety of ships.

Which ships were targeted in these attacks and what was the damage caused?
The names of many ships have come to light in these attacks that took place on March 11, 2026. The Thai-flagged ship Mayuree Naree was attacked with projectiles. After this incident, Oman’s Navy rescued 20 crew members safely, but 3 people are still reported missing. Apart from this, ships like One Majesty and Star Gwyneth have also been damaged by these attacks. According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), so far during the month of March there have been about 16 attacks due to which 17 commercial ships have been damaged.
What is the impact of this tension at the international level?
Due to this crisis, global maritime trade and oil prices are being affected. US Navy Admiral Brad Cooper said that the Strait of Hormuz is technically open, but companies are afraid to take ships from there. Iran has warned that if attacks on it continue, it will not let even a drop of oil go through this route. However, it is a matter of relief for India that Iran has assured safe passage to Indian ships.

What effect will this have on the common man and migrants?
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important sea routes in the world from where a large amount of crude oil is supplied. If tension increases here and the movement of ships stops, then the prices of petrol and diesel may increase all over the world. This has a direct impact on the migrants living in Gulf countries and their economy. Additionally, the lives of crew members working on ships, a large number of whom are Indians, also remain at risk. At present the United Nations and many big countries are appealing to Iran to stop these attacks.
