Indian Railways has decided to take strict action against social media handles sharing ‘misleading’ videos related to railway operations. The Railways said in a statement that during this festive season, some social media handles are circulating outdated or misleading videos, thereby creating confusion among passengers.
Railway administration said that more than 20 such social media handles have been identified and the process of registering FIR has been started. A 24×7 social media monitoring system has been implemented to keep a close eye on such anti-social elements. Railways has appealed to all social media users to avoid sharing videos of crowding or other incidents at stations without verifying the facts. Passengers are requested to refer only to the official notifications of the Railways and verified social media handles of the Railway Ministry, such as @RailMinIndia, for authentic information. Trust only Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.
Earlier on October 16, Hari Shankar Verma, Director General-Security, Railway Board, had said that the Indian Railways is focusing on data security and cyber security along with technological innovation to ensure operational security and efficiency. On the sidelines of the 16th International Railway Equipment Exhibition in New Delhi, Verma told ANI, “Railways is a very protected organization, and we always ensure that the data provided by the government is not misused.” He further said, “When you go on PRS, put in some data, and you realize that people from all over the world are talking to us. So we have a lot of data.”
The Center for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) acts as the nodal agency managing this huge digital infrastructure of railway passengers, which they use when they book tickets. “Many companies are doing this and our nodal agency is CRIS,” he said. Every Indian should be proud of the fact that computerization effectively started with the Railways, when printing of computer tickets started 38 years ago. “Think of making a reservation without a computer; You can’t even imagine. He said, “This is the technological and digital identity of India.”
