The Haryana government has sent state Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrujit Kapoor on leave amid the opposition’s attack on the BJP government over the alleged suicide of IPS (Indian Police Service) officer Y Puran Kumar and Kumar’s family demanding action against the accused officers.
Media advisor to Haryana Chief Minister Rajiv Jaitley said, “Yes, the government has sent the DGP on leave.”
Kumar, a 2001 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, had allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself at his residence in Sector-11, Chandigarh on October 7. He had left an eight-page ‘final note’, in which eight senior IPS officers, including Haryana Director General of Police Shatrujit Kapoor and former Rohtak Superintendent of Police (SP) Narendra Bijarania, have been accused of ‘caste discrimination, targeted mental harassment, public humiliation and torture’. Bijarania was transferred on Saturday.
Kumar’s wife and Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Amneet P Kumar has demanded registration of an FIR against Kapoor and Bijarania for abetting her husband’s suicide.
Kumar’s post-mortem and last rites have not been conducted yet, as his family has refused to give consent for it unless their demands are met. Haryana government and Chandigarh officials are trying to pacify Kumar’s wife.
Meanwhile, on Monday, several opposition leaders reached Kumar’s Sector-24 residence, including Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, Congress MP from Rohtak Deepender Singh Hooda, INLD chief Abhay Singh Chautala and Punjab Finance Minister and AAP leader Harpal Singh Cheema. He expressed grief over Kumar’s death and sought to ensure justice for the family.
Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Vikramarka said he has come to Chandigarh to console the family of Kumar, who hails from the southern state. He described the alleged suicide as ‘extremely tragic’ and demanded the government to take immediate action against the officials mentioned in Kumar’s ‘last note’.
Vikramarka said, ‘Y Puran Kumar sacrificed his life. In his ‘final note’ he specifically mentioned two officers, Haryana DGP Shatrujit Kapoor and the then Rohtak SP Narendra (Bijarania) and said that both of them harassed and humiliated him and they were the root cause of his suicide.
Vikramarka demanded that the government take immediate action on Kumar’s ‘last note’ and take appropriate action against the officials responsible.
