Kishore Makwana, president of the National Scheduled Castes Commission (NCSC), visited Karur in Tamil Nadu on Friday and met the families of 12 people of the community who lost their lives in a stampede during a recent stampede during a rally by actor Vijay.
The Commission recommended that a eligible member of each condolences bereaved SC family should be given a government job in view of their poor socio-economic status.
Vijay’s party Tamilga Vatri Kazhagam (TVK) killed 41 people in a stampede during a rally organized on 27 September and injured more than 100 people.
The commission said in a statement that Makwana inspected the stampede site with senior officials of NCSC State Office and then expressed condolences by visiting the house of Scheduled Caste victims. He was accompanied by District Officer and Superintendent of Police of Karur.
The statement said, “The Commission stands firmly with the Scheduled Caste community in this hour of grief and tragedy.” Also, the families were assured of full assistance from the Center.
Makwana also held a detailed review meeting with the district officials and directed them to submit a comprehensive report on mob management and security arrangements, adequate police deployment, acceptance process of the venue and relief measures taken so far.
According to the Commission, 15 of the 41 dead were from the Scheduled Caste community. The dead include men, women and children from poor families.
The NCSC said that the Karur tragedy “gives a painful reminiscent of such unfortunate incidents of human price, which has caused irreparable damage to the families and shook the conscience of the nation.”
