Requesting the release of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, his wife Geetanjali Angamo has approached the Supreme Court. Wangchuk was detained on 26 September under the Strict National Security Act (Rasuka), two days after demonstrations in Ladakh.
Four people were killed and 90 people were injured in the protests in that union territory to demand state status to Ladakh and include them in the sixth schedule. Wangchuk is lodged in Jodhpur Jail in Rajasthan. Angamo has challenged Wangchuk’s custody and requested his immediate release in his petition filed through advocate Sarvam Ritam Khare. In the petition, the decision to put Rasuka on Wangchuk has also been questioned.
Angmo alleged that he has not yet received a copy of the custody order, which is a violation of the rules. Apart from this, he said that he has not yet been able to contact Wangchuk. Recently, the Ladakh administration had rejected the claims of “implicating” Wangchuk or “secretly action”.
