Due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, there are about 400 ships parked in the sea near Oman waiting to move forward. Iran has clarified that it is not closing the way for all countries but is allowing some selected countries to pass. This also includes the name of India which Iran has considered as its friend. The United Nations has expressed deep concern over the closure of this sea route because it could stop the supply of oil and fertilizer around the world.
Ships from which countries have been allowed to sail?
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi officially announced on March 26, 2026 that ships from certain countries will be allowed to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. This exemption has been given to those countries with which Iran has good relations. According to Iran, ships which are not involved in any kind of military activity against them will be given safe passage.
India: Indian ships have been allowed to pass safely through this sea route.
China and Russia: No restrictions have been imposed on merchant ships of these two countries.
Pakistan and Iraq: Ships from these countries will also be able to cross the route with the coordination of Iranian authorities.
Non-hostile vessels: Ships from other countries that follow the rules can also sail with clearance.
New regulations for merchant ships and the international response
According to reports, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has created a new system for the passage of ships. Under this, the ships have to submit their documents and only after getting the clearance code, they are allowed to proceed with Iranian escort. India’s Shipping Ministry has denied reports that Iran is extorting money from ships in exchange for granting passage. The ministry has clarified that this movement is taking place under international laws.
