Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh). The holy land of Sanskardhani Jabalpur is not only historical but also divine. Because it was here on the auspicious day of 13 September 1933 (Bhadrapada Sud Nom) that the most revered Mahant Swami Maharaj was incarnated. The same divine child, who later became the spiritual founder of the worldwide BAPS Swaminarayan organization and an inspirational guru of millions of hearts.
It is said in Hindu scriptures “Sampradayao Guru Kramah” i.e. any true sect is identified by its Guru tradition. This tradition, starting from Lord Shri Swaminarayan, continues uninterruptedly till today, the sixth spiritual successor, the most revered Mahant Swami Maharaj in the form of Brahma.
Inspiring glimpses of student life
Mahant Swami Maharaj’s Purvashram name was Vinubhai. Since childhood, a wonderful combination of peace, gentleness and thirst for knowledge was visible in him.
Passion for reading and solitude:
Vinubhai had a deep friendship with books. He would often read in the nearby garden or even on moonlit nights. His concentration was so amazing that the lesson heard in the class would get imprinted in his memory. There is no need to study again after returning home. Fearless and disciplined:
While going to school, there was a big drain. Where the parents would come to drop the remaining children. Whereas fearless Vinubhai would cross that drain alone. Self-confidence and fearlessness were in his nature since childhood. Multilingual talent and sharp memory:
Gujarati at home, Hindi outside and English in school. Even in the environment of these three languages, his command over every subject was amazing. He still has the poems memorized in third grade by heart. His favorite line was: “He that is down need fear no fall, he that is humble ever shall have God to be his guide.” Education and Awards:
Mahant Swami Maharaj completed his education from Christ Church Boys High School, Jabalpur to Senior Cambridge. The prize he chose for standing first in fifth grade was a book. This was the most beautiful proof of his devotion towards knowledge. Artistic sensibility and detachment:
His artistic sense was also very unique. It was his habit to draw beautiful pictures in school. He himself used to say – “I paint, but I never thought of making a career in painting. It was my rule to forget the painting or artwork I made later. Because true art is not an attachment, but a medium of self-peace.” Sports and gentle nature:
Football was his favorite game. His skill at the ‘left full back’ position attracted everyone’s attention. He was always calm, smiling and full of affection. He was beloved by all his classmates. Principal’s Prediction:
His school principal Mr. Robinson would often say – ‘Vinubhai, you will become a great religious leader in the future.’ And this prediction has been proved true literally today.

The life of Mahant Swami Maharaj is proof of the truth that spirituality is manifested not by birth but by nature. Knowledge, humility, fearlessness and service, these four qualities were a part of his existence since his childhood.

Today the same child, whose childhood was spent in books, prayer and purity. Today he is the spiritual guide of 55 countries, 1,800 temples and millions of devotees around the world. His life teaches – “A true student is one who remains engrossed in knowledge, humility and service throughout his life.”
