The missile attacks on Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City have shaken the gas supply across the world. Due to these attacks, there has been a huge decline of 17 percent in Qatar’s Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) production capacity. This news is quite worrying for India because India buys about 47 percent of its total gas requirement from Qatar only. According to the Qatar government, the repair work may take a long time, which may increase gas prices in the coming years.

🚨: Indian Rupee Update: Rupee crosses 93 against dollar, now fear of falling to 95, petrol and electronic goods will become expensive.

What is the situation in Qatar after the attack and when will it improve?

Qatar Energy head Saad Sherida al-Kaabi said in an official statement that the missile attacks had caused significant damage to the facility. It may take at least 5 years to compensate for this damage and completely repair it. The Government of Qatar has imposed long-term force majeure on some gas agreements. This blockage is estimated to cost Qatar about $20 billion in lost earnings every year. Iran is being blamed for the attacks, which has increased tension in the area.

What effect will this have on India and what are the import figures?

India is largely dependent on Qatar for its energy needs and this new crisis could create problems for India. However, Indian officials say that there is sufficient availability of gas in the country and no major interruption in supply has been recorded. But in future the rates may increase due to less supply of gas in the global market. You can see the main information related to this crisis in the table given below:

Details Information Event Date 18 and 19 March 2026 Production reduction 17 percent (for next 5 years) Annual revenue loss $ 20 billion India’s dependence 47 percent of total imports India’s import volume 11.30 million metric tons Major plants Ras Laffan Industrial City

This crisis will affect not only India but also countries like Italy, Belgium, South Korea and Bangladesh. Organizations like Wood Mackenzie believe that this incident will significantly reduce the supply of gas in the international market. India’s largest gas company Petronet LNG Ltd is also keeping an eye on the situation as it gets large quantities of gas from Qatar.
