The counting of votes for the Vice -Presidential election has started in New Delhi on Tuesday. Sansad members voted for the 15th Vice President’s election from 10 am to 5 pm today. A total of 13 MPs did not participate in the Voting in the Vice President’s election. These include seven of Biju Janata Dal, four of Bharat Rashtra Samithi, one Independent MP from Shiromani Akali Dal.
National Democratic Alliance candidate and Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan and India Block candidate Justice B.K. Sudarshan Reddy is competing for the post of Vice President. In the first day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi cast the first vote in the Vice Presidential elections, followed by Union Minister Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, JP Nadda, Kiren Rijiju and other big leaders.
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, MP Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and others also voted in the Vice Presidential elections.
The election is taking place 50 days after Jagdeep Dhankar resigned as Vice President on July 21, citing health reasons. The BJP -led NDA and opposition parties organized a mock poll before the important day and asked the MPs to take care while exercising their franchise, otherwise their vote would be illegal.
It seems that NDA candidate CP Radhakrishnan has the support of 427 MPs for the post, which is more than the 391 figure of the majority. Radhakrishnan is expected to get 293 votes in the Lok Sabha, while the Rajya Sabha is expected to have 134 votes in his favor.
Joint opposition candidate Reddy has the support of 354 MPs, out of which 249 are in the House and 105 in the upper house of Parliament. Currently there are 781 members in Parliament, of which 542 are in the Lok Sabha, one of which is vacant and 239 is in Rajya Sabha, of which five seats are vacant. Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has decided to stay away from voting in the Vice President’s election. Meanwhile, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) will not participate in the Vice Presidential election.
