New Delhi. The Supreme Court has shown a strong attitude in the case of stubble burning. During the hearing in the Supreme Court on Wednesday, Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice K.K. Vinod Chandran’s bench said that if some farmers are sent to jail, then others will get a lesson and the habit of burning stubble will be curbed. The court raised the question that why the government is not taking strict legal steps in the matter of burning stubble? He said that there is intention to save the environment, so why are the provisions of punishment not made? The Chief Justice also said that farmers give food and because of this they are special for us, but it does not mean that the law should break.
Earlier, Amicus Curie Aparajita Singh told the bench of the Supreme Court that farmers have been given subsidies and machines for not burning stubble. Despite this, farmers make excuses. Amicus Curie told the bench of the Supreme Court that some farmers say they are asked to burn the stubble at a place where the satellite is not monitored. He said that from the year 2018, the Supreme Court gave several orders for not burning the straw, but the farmers only show helplessness. At the same time, Punjab government lawyer Rahul Mehra said that in the last few years, the straw burning has reduced. This year will be better. The Punjab government’s lawyer said that most are small farmers and what will happen to the family by sending them to jail.
When this argument was made about the small farmer by the Punjab government lawyer, the Chief Justice said that there is not talk of sending everyone to jail, but it is necessary to do so to give the message. The Chief Justice said that he has read in some newspapers, can the straw become fuel? The court directed the Central Pollution Control Board and the Air Quality Management Commission to fill all the vacant posts in three months. The court has also sought a report from the Air Quality Management Commission in three weeks. The court has also asked to make plans to stop air pollution. Every year all the farmers burn the straw during the winter season. Incidents of stubble burning are mainly seen in Punjab, Haryana and West UP. Farmers say that they cannot sow new crops without burning the straw.
