The Telangana government has instructed all District Medical and Health Officers (DM and HO) to make the public aware of ‘alert’ issued on ‘Coldrif’ Kapha Syrup. A poisonous substance has been reportedly found in this phlegm syrup.

In a letter sent to DM and HO, the Public Health Director of the Telangana government has directed the officials to raise awareness in the public about the alert issued by the State Drug Control Administration on September 4, in which the batch number has been asked to stop using the syrup ‘Coldriff’ syrup of SR-13. The drugs of this batch of ‘Coldrif’ Kapha Syrup have allegedly found adulteration of a poisonous substance Dythylene Glycol (DEG).

The letter shared with the media on Monday (released on October 5) states that if people have this syrup, they should immediately inform the local drug control authority on the toll-free number.

The Public Health Director also asked the District and Health Officers (DM and HO) to strictly implement and broadcast the counseling issued by the Directorate General of Health Services of the Union Ministry of Health (DGHS) regarding the prudent fixation and distribution of cuff syrup for children.

DGHS said in consultation that most of the acute cough diseases occur in children are automatically cured and often cure without medicinal intervention.

It says that children under two years of age should neither consult to give medicines for cough and cold nor should they be given these medicines. They are usually not recommended for children under five years of age and should be careful when giving medicines to children above five years of age, clinical evaluation of the drug and appropriate doses and other relevant precautions should be strictly followed.

The Madhya Pradesh government banned the sale of ‘Coldrif’ syrup on October 4 after the death of nine children due to suspected kidney infection in Chhindwara district from September 7.
