Amidst the ongoing conflict in West Asia, the Indian government has completed the safe evacuation of its citizens from Iran. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) informed on Monday 6 April 2026 that a total of 1,777 Indian citizens have been brought back from Iran so far. These people have been transported to India by transit through Armenia and Azerbaijan. The government said that this operation is being conducted amid the ongoing tension for the last two months.

How were Indians expelled from Iran and which countries helped in this?
According to External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the Indian Embassy in Tehran has coordinated these evacuation efforts. In this entire operation, Armenia and Azerbaijan have played an important role in providing land and air access to India. Of the total 1,777 people, 1,545 have reached India via Armenia and 234 via Azerbaijan. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has expressed special gratitude to Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan for this help.

The returning Indians include a large number of students and fishermen. The government said that during this entire campaign, not only Indians but also citizens of neighboring countries have been helped. Its main figures are given below:

On 5 April 2026, a group of 345 fishermen reached Chennai from South Iran via Armenia. The Government of India has created a special control room for this which is working 24 hours. Advisories are being issued from time to time for Indians living in Gulf countries and Iran. Routes coming from Iran have been routed through Armenia and Azerbaijan, while those coming from Israel are being routed through Egypt and Jordan.
