West Bengal: Big success for police in Durgapur gangrape case, three accused arrested

West Bengal Police has arrested three accused in the case of alleged gang rape of a medical student from Odisha in Durgapur. Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate gave information on Sunday.

A second year student of a private medical college was allegedly gang-raped in Durgapur. The victim is a resident of Jaleshwar, Odisha.

According to the medical student’s father, she had gone out to eat with one of her classmates. Then two-three other people reached there and raped her. He said the classmate “left him and ran away.”

The student’s father told reporters, “At 10 pm, her friend called us and told us that your daughter has been raped. We live in Jaleshwar. My daughter used to study here. Yesterday, one of her classmates took her out on the pretext of eating, but when two-three more people came, he left her and ran away. They raped her.”

He said, “The incident happened between 8:00 pm and 9:00 pm. The hostel was very far away, and she had come here to eat food. The security arrangements are not adequate. Such a serious incident happened, but no action was taken. There is no system here, no reaction.”

Earlier on Saturday, Durgapur Deputy Magistrate and SDO Ranjana Roy had said that the condition of the student is stable and her mother is with her. After meeting the student, Roy said that she was getting full support and assured that action would be taken.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Ranjana Roy said, “His condition is stable and his mother is with him. We are giving him full support and we have assured him that action will be taken.”

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi strongly condemned the incident, calling it “extremely condemnable and painful”.

In a post on X, Majhi had urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to ensure that strict action is taken against the accused as per law.

He said, “The unfortunate incident of gang rape of an Oriya student in Durgapur, West Bengal is extremely condemnable and painful. I am deeply shocked to hear this news. I urge West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to take strict action against the accused as per law.”

He said, “I have instructed senior officials to contact the West Bengal government and take necessary steps. All possible assistance will be provided to the victim’s family by the Odisha government.”
