Gadchiroli (Maharashtra). Two hardcore Maoists, carrying a total bounty of Rs 20 lakh, surrendered to the authorities. Maoists are husband and wife. The police gave this information on Wednesday. Gadchiroli Superintendent of Police Ankit Goel said the Maoist couple is Deepak alias Munshi Ramsu Ishtam, 34, from Maharashtra and his wife Shambati Navaru Alam, 25, from Narayanpur in Chhattisgarh.
Deepak served as the deputy commander of platoon number 21, while his wife Shambati was a member in the same unit and a reward of Rs 16 lakh and Rs four lakh was placed on the couple, respectively.
Goel said that Deepak has three murders, eight encounters and two arson charges with his Maoist gangs and was with the Shambatti Jan Militia organization and was also involved in two major encounters with security forces.
Deepak conducted half a dozen attacks against security forces in Chhattisgarh, in which a total of 31 policemen were killed.
He was recruited into Kasansur Dalam as a LOS member in July 2001, worked as a security guard to a central committee member named Devji and was promoted to deputy commander in 2004, platoon in 2009 on the Commander and was presently working as a Divisional Committee.
Shambatti joined the Maoist militia with Platoon No 16 in 2015 and then shifted to Platoon No 21, where he surrendered on Wednesday.
The government announced a reward of Rs 16 lakh and Rs 4 lakh on his head.
As per the surrender policy of the government, Rs 1 crore and other benefits will be given to the couple to ensure their rehabilitation.
Goel said that in the last three years, a total of 45 Maoists have laid down their arms, including five DVCs, two commanders, three deputy commanders, 34 members and one mass militia member.
Around 650 Maoists have surrendered in the past decade and have been given full benefits with houses, farming plots, official documents, benefits under various government welfare schemes, education etc. Goel has urged other Maoists to quit violence and appealed to take advantage.
