You may have heard about the problems of electricity, roads, water or traffic in any city, but New York, which is counted among the largest and modern cities of America, is troubled by rats. The rat population in the city is continuously increasing and the measures taken to stop it are proving inadequate. It is estimated that the number of rats in New York has crossed 3 million. To get rid of the problem of rats, remedies ranging from poison to traps and dry ice have been tried but without success. Despite all efforts, the number of rats is continuously increasing and the problem is that due to the use of poison, other animals are also in danger.
How to get rid of rats
To control the number of rats in New York, they are now considering giving them contraceptives. According to the New York Times, an owl that escaped from the zoo was found dead last Thursday. Rat poison has been found inside this owl named Flaco. After rat poison was found inside an owl, now some other method is being found in New York instead of killing rats by poisoning them. A proposal has also come for sterilization of rats. Contraceptives i.e. birth control will be used like poisonous chemicals. Shot Abreu, chairman of the committee on sanitation and solid waste management, said the contraceptive is far better than other methods.
Work is being done on pilot plan
As part of a new proposal to get rid of the rat problem, the city’s health department is starting work on a pilot scheme. Under this scheme, both male and female rats will be fed saline tablets which make them infertile. Shot Abreu said the effort will be more effective and will cover at least 10 blocks in the city. Abreu said that this effort will be continued and will be successful.
birth control in rats
According to Fox News, a contraceptive named Contrapest will be used for birth control in rats. These contraceptives are pellets filled with salty-tasting fat that are scattered in the area of rats. It targets ovarian function in mice and blocks sperm cell production in mice. Experts also believe that salty pellets are so tasty to rats that they will not go in search of food anywhere else.
rats liked pills
Dr. Loretta Meyer, the scientist who created the contraceptive saline pill, said the pellets were full of fat and salt, and were so tasty that rats preferred them to digging in the trash. Experts say that this formula does not pose a threat to other animals or people because it is made specifically for rats. This is both humane and effective.
