Today talk of Mumbai’s famous Wadala encounter in which Manya Surve was killed. The fear of Manya Surve, which started before the 70s in Mumbai, ended in the year 1982. As much as Manya Surve was a criminal, he was also very stubborn. Manya Surve of angry nature was called Dawood Ibrahim’s biggest enemy in those days. However, his terror was stopped by the Mumbai Police.
The Wadala encounter is officially considered to be the country’s first encounter in the history of Mumbai Police. In those days, the general public was upset due to the gang war between many gangs in Mumbai. In the year 1980-81, Mumbai Police formed a special unit. Whose task was to reduce the growing terror of the underworld in Mumbai. The same unit had killed Manya Surve in the first encounter.
The real name of Manya Surve, who was another name of fear, was Manohar Arjun Surve. He did his graduation from Kirti College in Mumbai but came to the world of Jarayam because of his half-brother Bhargava’s grandfather. Manohar used to call Surve by the name ‘Manya’ by his friends. While studying in college, he along with some of his friends formed a gang. Then in the year 1969 a man was murdered.
Manya Surve along with her brother had done this crime. Later he was also sentenced to life imprisonment in the same case. When he was sent to Yerwada Jail for punishment, there he started quarreling with the rest of the prisoners. The jail administration got fed up and sent him to Ratnagiri jail. On this Manya Surve got furious and sat on hunger strike.
He fell ill due to hunger strike for several days after which he was taken to the hospital for treatment. Then in November 1979, Manya escaped during treatment and after reaching Mumbai, got engaged in old work. Meanwhile, he also killed Dawood’s brother. Also, the escape of such a big criminal was like a stain on the reputation of Mumbai Police. For several months the police tried to catch him but each time he escaped.
After this, the case of Manya Surve was handed over to Ishaq Bagwan and Raja Tambat of the Special Unit. In January 1982, the police got information that Manya might come to Ambedkar College in Wadala to meet her girlfriend. On January 11, the information turned out to be correct. Ishaq of Mumbai Police’s Special Unit was ready with the team. It is said that perhaps Manya was aware, but Manya Surve was killed in this encounter in Wadala area.
