The country’s film industry, which we know as Bollywood, has been embroiled in controversies many times. Sometimes because of the statements of an actor/actress and sometimes because of the experiments of people associated with the industry. One of these cases was related to Bollywood’s famous actress Sonali Bendre. When she was embroiled in controversies due to clothes and a photoshoot. Some people associated with Bollywood entertain through their films, while some remain in the discussion due to their photoshoots and looks. In the year 1998, something similar happened with Bollywood actress Sonali Bendre. Sonali Bendre got a cover photoshoot done for a magazine and when it was published, there was an uproar across the country.
Actually, the whole matter is of March 1998, at that time a magazine named Showtime used to come. Actress Sonali Bendre did a cover photoshoot for this magazine. Sonali wore a dress designed by dress designer Ashley Charles Rebello for this shoot. It was a lemon yellow colored short kurta. In which there was a print of Om Namah Shivaya everywhere. As soon as the magazine was published, some people filed a complaint against Sonali Bendre.
In the case, people complained that Sonali’s photo was objectionable and said that this picture hurts her religious sentiments. Then three others including Sonali were accused of allegedly serving obscenity. After this, on March 27, 2001, Sonali, photographer Amit Kumar Ashar and dress designer Ashley Charles Rebello were arrested. Another accused in this case was Neelkanth Giri, the publisher of the magazine.
A case was registered against the photographer and dress designer including Sonali under Section 295A of the IPC for hurting the religious sentiments of the people. Then, when Sonali did not appear on the scheduled date due to the hearing in the court, a non-bailable warrant was issued against her. However, she appeared in the court for two days and was later released on bail after paying a nominal amount of Rs 12,000. Then after some time he was acquitted of the case.
