Chennai. Officials of the Indian Coast Guard have arrested a Sri Lankan fisherman for allegedly fishing in Indian waters. He was arrested on Tuesday near Nagapattinam, south-east of Kodiakkarai. The mechanized boat used by the Sri Lankan fisherman has also been seized by the Coast Guard officials.
He was handed over to the Coastal Security Team of Tamil Nadu Police on Tuesday night. The man was booked under India’s Maritime Zones Act 1981 at Vedaranyam Marine Police Station.
The person has been identified as Santhan, a resident of Valluvettithurai in Jaffna district of Sri Lanka.
After arresting him, the Coast Guard tried to take his boat to Nagapattinam. Sources told -AnyTV News that the boat capsized several times in the rough seas and it took around 20 hours for the boat to reach the shore.
He will be taken to the Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Chennai on Wednesday, officials said.
