Studying in private school, Generally, it is the opinion of the parents of school children that if their child studies in a government school, then he will be weak and will become smart if he studies in a private school. If you think the same way, then your opinion may be wrong. Now a recent new research has revealed that “Most parents believe that private schools will give their children a better education and set them up for success in life. But whether this belief is true or not, this belief is true or not.” But the evidence is not conclusive, Sally Larson and Alexander Forbes, PhDs in education and psychology from the University of New England, elaborate on this in a research paper published in The Conversation.
This survey was done in Australia
In Australia, 30 percent of children from nursery to fourth grade and 40 percent of children in fifth to eighth grade attend private schools. The fees of private schools are also decided differently according to the institution running them. Teaching in Catholic schools is generally less expensive. These schools cost a family up to $40,000 per year as fees. Despite being called ‘independent schools’, all schools in Australia receive government funding. Nearly every Catholic school receives about 75 percent of their funding, and independent schools get about 45 percent of their funding from the state and federal governments.
Effect of family background on children’s education
The research showed that in terms of socioeconomic background, students studying in private schools were no different from children in public schools. These findings are in line with other research conducted in Australia and internationally showing that family background is related to both the likelihood and academic achievement of attending a private school. While there may seem to be differences in academic achievement of students in private schools, these disappear once the child’s socio-economic background is taken into account.
In Australia, as in India, there is a view that private schools enhance the quality of education of a child. This means that the learning speed of students studying in a private school should be better than that of government school children. While research has not found any facts in its favor. Studies conducted in different groups have shown that students studying in government schools can do well academically if those children have a positive family background. This undermines claims that suggest better academic development of private school students.
