American Professor Mearsheimer described India as an emerging superpower.
The professor also spoke on Russia, China and America in the India Rising Summit 2024.
New Delhi. American political scientist John J. Mearsheimer on Tuesday described India as an “aspiring great power” that is increasingly positioned among the geopolitical forces associated with the US, China and Russia. Speaking at CNN AnyTV’s ‘Rising India Summit 2024’ in New Delhi, Mearsheimer said the US was the most powerful country during the unipolar phase, which began with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and lasted until about the mid-2010s.
Mearsheimer said that today the world is multi-polar, where great powers are competing for dominance. “By 2017, Vladimir Putin had saved Russia from being dead and then Russia is back as a great power and China is also a great power because of all the economic growth that happened during the 1990s and the first 17 years of the 21st century. Emerged.”

India is an aspiring superpower…
During the session titled ‘Geo-Calculus: Cracking the Code’, the American expert said that the world is now in a system where China, Russia and the US are the three great powers. When asked where India stands and whether it can play a role as a bridging power, Mearsheimer said India is an aspiring great power. “The two building blocks of great power in the international system are population size and wealth. To qualify as a great power you need a lot of money and a lot of people. “Things are changing rapidly in India’s favor.”
China was not considered a great power…
Professor Mearsheimer, known for predicting the Ukraine conflict, has written extensively about security issues and international politics. He has published seven books, including ‘The Tragedy of Great Power Politics’. Elaborating on the state of the current geo-political scenario, he said, “China was not considered a great power until recently because it did not have wealth, but it had population size. “India certainly has the size of the population, and it is becoming more prosperous year by year.”
